What People are saying about AAA Pilot Project

2010-01-18

AAA Steering Committee Chair Andy Baird discusses the AAA Pilot Project during a Rogers telecast of a recent AAA game.

"I hope when you make your decision you will remember the players that have advanced to our program so that the next wave of players will have the same opportunity.” Brian Kilrea, Ottawa 67s

As the decision on the future of AAA hockey in the ODMHA gets closer, here's what some observers are saying about the success of the program over the three-year pilot project:

Cyril Leeder, President, Ottawa Senators Hockey Club (NHL):

“As a sponsor of the Ottawa Senators AAA organization we are proud to associate ourselves with the AAA hockey association and would continue to do so if the pilot project is extended. It is unlikely that we would make any meaningful sponsorship in a AA league if the pilot project is dropped.”

Brian Kilrea, General Manager, Ottawa 67s (OHL):

“We had players in the past going to Toronto area to play at a better level, but now are staying home because of the strength of our AAA league. I hope when you make your decision you will remember the players that have advanced to our program so that the next wave of players will have the same opportunity.”

David Branch, Commissioner, Ontario Hockey League:

“Since the introduction of AAA hockey and the creation of the OEMHL, the OHL has seen an increase in the number of players drafted and developed for the OHL and other junior development leagues. In addition, the number of players selected to play for Team Ontario Under 17, Team Canada Under 18 and Under 20 teams is continuing to grow.”

Kevin Tansey, defenceman, Cumberland Grads (CJHL), 8th round selection 2009 OHL draft:

“I was lucky to be able to be able to play AAA hockey, because it gave me more exposure to junior scouts. The level of play in AAA is so much higher -- it allows players to improve more easily. Without AAA hockey, I don’t think I would have been selected in the OHL draft, or been a first round choice in the CJHL draft last year.  AAA was also a great opportunity for me to meet new friends who were once hated enemies.  The whole experience was great and it would be wrong to get rid of it.”

Robert Kitamura, Director of Central Scouting and Player Development, Ontario Hockey League:

“I believe that on the whole, your AAA Pilot has made your hockey clubs at the AAA level much more competitive.  Your teams are well coached, and competitive with many of the better AAA Programs throughout the province. “

Delmer Rints, Whitby Silver Stick Tournament Director:

“I have noticed since the AAA League was formed that the teams on the average are more competitive in our Tournament, and are also more successful in other Tournaments.”
