Major Midget Wild fights for playoff spot

2010-02-07

Philippe Quesnel makes a diving save against the Cyclones during first period action on February 6 in Casselman.

With 3 games left to play, the Major Midget Wild hold a two point lead over the Ottawa Valley Titans for the last playoff spot.

The Major Midget Wild lost an opportunity to take a giant step towards assuring a spot in the playoffs on Saturday February 6 in Casselman when they dropped a 6-3 decision to the Upper Canada Cyclones.

A win against the Cyclones would have solidified the Wild’s hold on fifth place in the standings, one point behind the Cyclones, and four points ahead of the Titans.  Instead, they now trail the Cyclones by five points.

The Wild spotted the Cyclones a two-goal lead in the first period, but came roaring back early in the second when Andrew Charlebois and Vincent Harris scored three minutes apart to tie the game at 2-2.  The Cyclones went ahead to stay late in second the period, and added three more goals in the third to put the game out of reach.  Simon Cousineau scored an unassisted power play goal in the third period for Eastern Ontario.

With three games left, the Wild are in a dogfight with the Ottawa Valley Titans for the last playoff spot.  Both teams struggled early in the season to attract players and had a hard time picking up wins, however as their rosters gelled the two teams have been much more competitive over the last month.

The OHA, currently in third place, is not eligible for the playoffs.

The Wild go head-to-head with the Titans on Saturday February 13 in a game that could settle the playoff picture.  Eastern Ontario’s last two games are against the Cyclones and the Senators.  The regular season wraps up on February 15.
